What is your domain finding process?

Hi guys,
I used to work with an SEO company in the past and they managed to purchase some very cheap but complete sites for me (so not expired domains, but full websites), which they used to link my site from. An example is this one: ihdbarbercollege.com
I no longer work with them and of course they didn't tell me how they did it, and now I am curious to find out where they found those websites, which platform they used to research related and available for sale sites which they purchased...
