How Bad is Duplicate Content?

I have a site where I tell scary stories on a podcast from both stories I have personally written and stories that others have written on a CC3 license. I tell approximately 3 stories at a time so I combine the stories with the CC3 license so that people listening can also read along if necessary. Unfortunately, I also think this is hurting my page rank and SEO.

I'm wondering if it would be better to write small 300 word or so blurbs for each story and link back to the original, or does...
